Llanhilleth RFC v Rhymney RFC - League Fixture - 26.01.19

Llanhilleth welcomed Rhymney RFC to the Park for what was sure to be a bruising battle and our toughest challenge in the league to date and that it proved to be, as they’d beaten us in the earlier league fixture we were looking to put that record straight and gain the win today.

The game was played in atrocious conditions throughout but neither side let this hinder them and both teams looked to play an expansive game whenever possible.

Both teams put each other under pressure in the opening 30 minutes but it was Llan who were first to make it count and following a lengthy spell in their opponents half from a five yard scrum No8 Iestyn James crashed over for a try which was converted by Outside half Chris Stevens for a 7-0 lead.

This proved to be the only try of this very tight game, with the remaining points coming from the boot of outside half Chris Stevens with two penalties in the first half for a 13-0 halftime lead and a further one in the second half for a 16-0 final score and hard fought victory on the day.

To their credit Rhymney gave their all for the full eighty minutes but ran out second best on the day in very difficult conditions. We are sure they will quickly put this result behind them and will be in the mix come the final stages of the season. All at Llan wish them a successful remainder of their season.

Even though all of Llanhilleth’s starting fifteen and replacements played their part, special mentions go to the front row club of Props Gavin Jones and Terry O’Brien and hooker Carl Hone who were the pick of the forwards and outside half Chris Stevens , wing Chris Hastings , and Fullback Luke Morgan who were the pick of the backs.

The coaches will now concentrate on getting the squad ready in training this week, as we look forward to our next league fixture this Saturday away to Whiteheads RFC which is sure to be another stern test as we look to avenge our earlier league defeat and look to push on further up the league table.
