Llanhilleth welcomed local rivals Aberbargoed RFC to the Park for our return League encounter, having taken their then unbeaten league record in the away Fixture, we were sure they would be looking to avenge that earlier defeat, so we were expecting another stern challenge today and that it proved to be.
Llanhilleth opened the scoring early on through right wing Alex Davies to lead 5-0, to their credit Aberbargoed responded with a well taken try through their outside centre which was converted by their outside half to lead 7-5.
Llanhilleth regained the lead with a penalty goal by outside half Kyle Sterry, this was followed by two further tries in the first half through left wing Chris Hastings and outside centre Chris Stevens which was converted by Sterry for an halftime lead of 20-7.
Aberbargoed started the second half well and reduced the arrears with a penalty goal by their outside half to make it 20-10, Llanhilleth though were soon back on the front foot and Davies and Stevens crossed for their second tries of the game the latter again converted by Sterry for a hard fought 32-10 victory.
To their credit Aberbargoed gave their all for the full eighty minutes but ran out second best on the day. We are sure they will quickly put this result behind them and will still be in the mix come the end of the season. All at Llan wish them a successful remainder of their season.
Even though all of Llanhilleth’s starting fifteen and replacements played their part, special mentions go to the front row club of Props Gavin Jones and Terry O’Brien and hooker Carl Hone who were the pick of the forwards and outside half Kyle Sterry, and centres Chris Stevens and match of the match Dominic Bevan Jones who were the pick of the backs.
The coaches will now concentrate on getting the squad ready in training over the next two weeks, as we look forward to our next league fixture a week Saturday at home to Markham RFC, which is sure to be another stern test as we look to keep our current good league form going into the business end of the season.
